It's Just a Coffee...Right? ☕
A quick look at how your everyday drinks impact more than you think and the small changes that actually make a difference.

It’s a hot afternoon.
You’ve just finished school, your bag feels heavier than it should, and all you want is something cold.
You walk into Starbucks.
The air-conditioning hits, the music’s playing, and a few minutes later, you’re holding that iced drink, cold, sweet, perfect.
For a moment, everything feels better. But here’s something I didn’t really think about: that “perfect” little moment isn’t as harmless as it feels.
What's the real impact?
Most iced coffees and drinks come in single-use plastic cups, with lids and straws that are used for maybe 20 minutes… and then thrown away.
Globally, over 500 billion disposable cupss are used every year, and a large portion of them don’t get recycled. Many are lined with plastic or made of mixed materials, which makes them difficult to process.
And here’s the part most people don’t think about: plastic doesn’t just “go away.” Over time, it breaks down into microplastics , tiny particles that have been found in oceans, soil, and even inside the human body. Scientists are still studying the long-term effects, but it’s clear they don’t belong there.
So that one drink? It doesn’t just disappear when you’re done with it.
And then there’s the habit part. It starts as an occasional treat. Then it becomes a daily thing. And suddenly, it’s not just about coffee: it’s routine, spending, and consumption all rolled into one.
In fact, studies on habits show that repeated small actions, like buying a daily drink, quickly become automatic, meaning you stop questioning them altogether. Again, it’s not about quitting iced drinks.
That’s not realistic. But maybe it’s about pausing for a second.
So what can you actually do?
Okay, let’s be real. You’re not going to stop buying your favorite drinks overnight, and you don’t have to.
But maybe start by not making it an everyday thing. When something becomes daily, it stops feeling special and turns into autopilot. That quick stop for a drink? It becomes routine, not a choice. Cutting it down, even by a few days a week, already makes a difference, both for the environment and honestly, your wallet.
And then there’s the small stuff that seems insignificant, but isn’t. Carrying a reusable bottle or cup might feel like effort at first, but once it becomes part of your routine, it replaces dozens of single-use cups without you even thinking about it. The same goes for skipping the straw or extra plastic lid, it’s such a small decision in the moment, but multiplied over weeks and months, it adds up way more than you expect.
Also, try paying attention to why you’re buying it. Is it because you actually want that drink, or because you’re bored, stressed, or just used to having something in your hand? That one second of awareness can break a habit you didn’t even realize you had.
DIY Idea ( perfect for the summer)
Add a handful of ice cubes to a glass.
Pour in cold milk (or any plant-based milk).
Add your coffee or tea (cooled).
Mix well and add a little honey or jaggery if you want some sweetness.
No waiting in line, no extra plastic, no overpaying.
Just something simple that actually does the job.
